Will Chiefs’ Transfer Targets Wait? The Carwash Crew Debates.
The sale of Bidvest Wits’ PSL status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) has sent shockwaves throughout the local football fraternity, with many expressing disappointment in the transaction. The deal means that Wits will be known as TTM FC starting next season and that the club will now play their home fixtures at Thohoyandou Stadium in Limpopo. The club was due to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021, but their legacy has been left in limbo due to the sale. In the latest episode of The Carwash podcast on SL Radio, the sale and the lack of respect for current staff and club history are scrutinised.
“Because Wits is so big, and Wits has got so much history, the way this thing is done, I was hoping it would have been done properly, you know? Smoothly as well, maybe [if] people who were involved with the team knew in advance, being given a chance to start looking for jobs elsewhere. You know for a coach it’s easy, you know with Gavin Hunt’s history, it’s easy for him to stay 2 months without having a job and then he’ll find a job very quickly and very easily. As for players that are on top of their game, that have been playing regularly at Wits for 5-6 years, it won’t be much of a challenge for them to get teams,” former Bafana Bafana Star Teko Modise explains.
“But there are staff members (who) have been there, team managers that have been there, and all of a sudden you get a text like ‘dude, you need to start looking for a team’. It’s not easy, it’s very challenging and for the fact that the team is moving away from Joburg, it’s very dodgy,” he continues.
Former Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Sean Roberts adds, “For a club with so much history, so many juniors with their hopes literally crushed now because they don’t have a PSL team, and for the staff. You’re talking about a staff where some have been there 25-30 years. It’s not okay.”
SL Radio host Sloo Phaho concludes “I still can’t wrap my head around [the] 99 years, they were about to turn 100 next year and now all that history is what, moved to Limpopo? I don’t think that’s how it works.”
