SuperSport United Topped The Absa Premiership At Christmas

SuperSport United

SuperSport United sat proudly on top of the league this Christmas as they became the first side that's neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor Kaizer Chiefs to do so since 2009/10.   Read: Pirates Star Involved In Serious Car Crash   Every year from 2010 onwards it has been one of the two sides that have been sitting pretty at the summit of the Absa Premiership for the turn of the year, with Chiefs or Sundowns going on to win four of the last six championships.   The last time that Matsatsantsa topped the league at the Christmas break was that season in 2009/10, and they eventually went on to win the Absa Premiership under the guidance of Gavin Hunt.   Now, with Stuart Baxter at the helm, SuperSport will be hoping for the same outcome this time around, although will know that their spot is precarious as they currently only top the table on goal difference.   Also, only five times in the last 10 years have the team that have topped the league at New Year actually gone on to win the title, with Sundowns overtaking Baxter's Chiefs in 2013/14 after the Amakhosi had amassed what looked like an unassailable lead.   Another aspect to take into consideration this year is the fact that Masandawana, who won the CAF Champions League, have five games in hand on the current leaders and are only six points behind them.   The next round of Absa Premiership fixtures will get underway on the 7th of February as the second half of the season begins.
