Evans was 89 years old at the time of his passing. It was from Evans that Jomo Sono purchased the franchise of Highlands Park in January 1983, for R100 000, to form his own club.
During the 1930s, Evans grew up watching pre-war games at the old Wanderers Stadium (now Johannesburg Park Station). He became the boss of the Lions of the North from 1959.
Evans played a major role in the development of football. Evans was pleased to see the revival of his old club when Highlands won promotion from the NFD to the PSL at the end of last season.
A family member believes that Evans changed the history of South African soccer.
"Rex united the whites and blacks. He had a heart for all mankind and always wanted the best for everybody and anybody. He was ahead of his time and changed the history of soccer in SA. Until the day he died, Rex was full of soccer talk. It was his passion in life and he was very happy that Highlands was rising up again, although in the beginning appeared a bit surprised that the name had been used," a source told the Siya crew.
