It was the Wednesday evening of 11 April 2001, during the Soweto Derby clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at Ellis Park Stadium that 43 people died.

The game had just gone for a little less than 40 minutes with the scoreboard reading 1-1 between the two giants of South African football when the least expected happened.

The stampede took place because the disgruntled ticket-carrying fans were still outside the stadium, while the officials were believed to have told them that the match venue was full to capacity.

More than 150 people were injured as more than 80 000 fans tried to fill the 60 000-seater match venue on the evening. Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, set up a judicial commission.

A number of people, including the organisers and the league's officials were later to be blamed for the deaths.
