Bafana Finish Third

COSAFA Cup

Result: Lesotho 1-2 Bafana

Date: 20 July 2013

Bafana Bafana fought back from a goal down to beat Lesotho 2-1 as they claimed third place in the Cosafa Cup on Saturday.

Bafana created a number of chances throughout the game but in the end goals from Mandla Masango and Hlompho Kekana were enough while Wayne Sandilands had to save a second-half penalty.

Lerato Chabangu and Mzikayise Mashaba combined brilliantly in what should have been the opening goal but the latter saw his strike stopped at close range by the goalkeeper.

Disaster struck at the other end when Thulani Hlatshwayo was harshly judged to have tugged in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Maile Tlali made no mistake with the resulting penalty to put the minnows ahead.

Bafana were still well in control though and saw Lebogang Manyama have a shot tipped off target by the goalkeeper, who got down well.

Masango was then denied a great chance when the goalkeeper failed to deal with a ball into the area and Chabangu sent it back to Masango who saw his scuffed effort cleared of the line.

He would not miss with his second chance though as a free-kick was smartly worked to him just inside the area and he curled his finish home through a group of players.

It took South Africa eight minutes after the break to find another when Hlompho Kekana burst down the flank and cut into the area before lashing a low finish in off the inside of the far post.

Chabangu had earlier lofted a finish over the target while Wayne Sandilands came off his line quickly to deal with a dangerous pass into the area.

Lesotho could have pulled the game level with another penalty after Buhle Mkhwanazi handled a cross into the area but Sandilands made a great save to deny Tlali.

The game was fairly scrappy in the final minutes though Edward Manqele had a chance late on only for it to be blocked as Bafana claimed third place.
