Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Stuart Baxter, says that he fully expects Reyaad Pieterse or Brilliant Khuzwayo to step up to the plate in Itumeleng Khune’s absence.
Khune, the Amakhosi’s number one goalkeeper and captain, was recently ruled out for six weeks with a stress fracture in his foot that he picked up on international duty, and will miss a number of Chiefs’ next games.
While Baxter says that he’s yet to decide on whether Pieterse or Khuzwayo will get the nod, he says that both are capable of deputising for Khune.
“Being without your best players is always a challenge. We were without Bernard and Shabba, Knowledge didn’t come back, so we needed people to step up to the plate.
“Last time Itu was out Reyaad stepped up to the plate, and this time I’d say that both him and Brilliant are candidates because Brilliant has got his act together and is fighting for a place.
“Itu is one of our top players, and of course we’ll miss him. If my Lamborghini isn’t working today then maybe I have to take the old Porsche. One of our ‘keepers has now got to be a Porsche, maybe he’s not a Lamborghini just yet, but he can be that Porsche. Lets see if they step up.”
Chiefs take on University of Pretoria tomorrow afternoon as they look for their sixth Absa Premiership win of the season, though it remains to be seen which man will be between the sticks when they line up against Steve Barker’s side.
