Wits have confirmed the signing of Dutch Eredivisie star, Kees Kwakman. The central defender boasts some top pedigree from his time playing in both Holland’s Premier League, as well as the German Bundesliga.
The 31-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Clever Boys, with a one year option after that. He spent 2013/14 on the books of Eredivisie outfit, NAC Breda.
Dutch news provider, Omroep Brabant, has quoted Breda’s Technical Director, Graham Rutjes, as saying the move is good for both the player and the club. He said, “It is a good solution for both Kees and NAC. We now have room in our budget to see what else we can do.”
Wits’ Head of Academy and former NAC star, Glen Salmon, has explained what qualities Kwakman can bring to Gavin Hunt’s side.
He said, “Yes, Kees has played at both of my old clubs in Holland (NAC and Groningen). He was here for a week’s assessment. He’s a good player and is a left-footed central defender. He can also play as a six (holding midfield role). It’s important to have a look at these defenders first – the PSL can be more erratic than Europe. Sometimes you get less protection here. However, we also saw how well Alje Schut did at Mamelodi Sundowns, hey. I think he will be a good addition to the squad.”
The defender is just one of a spate of new signings made by Wits in recent weeks. The crew will monitor further player changes in the Students camp. Watch this space!
