In response to Ace Ncobo’s strong worded comments, Cape Town City have questioned the former PSL match official’s interpretation of the PSL’s standard of refereeing.
In light of the criticism that the referees in the PSL have received in recent times, City’s chairman, John Comitis, recently suggested that South Africa should look to European referees, in assisting South African referees to elevate the standard of officiating.
Ncobo, a former PSL referee, subsequently referred to Comitis’ solution as ludicrous.
City have now defended Comitis’ solution, questioning Ncobo’s viewpoint. City’s media officer, Julian Bailey, told Soccer Laduma that we as a football fraternity need to be honest with ourselves, regarding local referees.
“I’m surprised that he (Ncobo) would say that to be honest, because I’m not sure which matches Ace has been watching, but I think the last three months of PSL football, have been absolute chaos,” Bailey explained.
In addition, Bailey disagrees with Ncobo’s stance, that South African referees produce a high level of officiating.
“I’m surprised that he thinks our referees are that good. If you look at the multiple FIFA World Cup tournaments, our referees are not at the top of the list when selected by FIFA. So I don’t know how he can say that our referees are better than the rest of world, when it’s an objective selection made for these World Cup tournaments. In recent times, only Daniel Bennett and Victor Gomes are being recognised globally.”
Do you agree with Baily’s response on South African referees, or do we give foreigners too much credit for the work they do abroad?
