Seema: There Was Brains Behind It

In the end it was only a draw, but Black Leopards coach Lehlohonolo Seema has discussed how his side halted Mamelodi Sundowns’ winning streak.

“It was a game where we only came here for one thing – just to get something, whether it was three points, one point or four points,” the Lidoda Duvha mentor told journalists, even joking that a stalemate against the DStv Premiership log leaders felt like more than a win.

Seema suggested that his game plan was simple: leave out the fancy footwork and try frustrate Downs and catch them napping.

“Any point that was possible to take, that’s how we prepared. We never bothered by saying we needed to play good football or having shots on target. We really just needed to stay compact and keep our shape and structure, and then we wait for our opportunity,” he said.

“I think the goal we conceded looked soft, but you could you see there’s brains behind it – they pulled three of our players, opened the space for (Mosa) Lebusa and scored. But other than that we knew we had to work harder to salvage something.”

Leopards equalised in the second half through Rodrick Kwabe.

“At half-time we said we needed to keep to what we were doing, play forward a bit more by keeping the ball because Sundowns will counter press, but you can find spaces behind. We kept our shape and it was unfortunate we lost Sibusiso Khumalo because he was giving them a little bit of problems on the left. To us any point we can put on the board is crucial, so this one point felt like three points,” Seema explained.
