Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise has explained why he feels the club still needs to bring players on board, despite having arguably the best squad in the PSL.
Sundowns claimed their fifth straight title this season and seemingly have no competition in the league right now, but Modise feels that they still need to go into the market when the transfer window opens to add to what they have.
A key position he feels they need to bolster is central defence, which has also been mentioned by co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi, who recently said they could look at finding a replacement for the departed Ricardo Nascimento.
"I think there is a need to go into the market. I think Mamelodi Sundowns struggled this season with centre backs. You've seen a lot of changes with the centre backs and you've seen the injuries they've had. There's balance in midfield, but there's always a question with the centre backs," Modise said recently when asked by the Siya crew.
"That became critical when it came to the Champions League, where if they had the most consistent centre back pairing, they could have defended a bit better. But because they are a team that's ambitious, they will look at beefing up in that department because you are looking at the Champions League. If you realise, Sundowns get knocked out not because they did not play well, but what they could have done better. So, I think that's the department they could look at in my opinion."
