Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has explained how they previously missed out on signing Liverpool’s latest signing Luis Diaz, as well as Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jnr.
Over the years, Sundowns have tapped into the South American market to find talent and have managed to bring in players such as Leonardo Castro, Ricard Nascimento, and Erwin Saavedra, who is their latest recruit from that part of the world.
But, had they acted a little quicker in the 2019, they could have landed the signature of Diaz, who joined Benni McCarthy’s former club, FC Porto. Liverpool recently announced the signing of the Colombian attacker who will join a talented strike force featuring Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firminio and Sadio Mane.
"We've got a very network of scouts who are doing a lot of good work for us, but technology is also helping us because we use data to compare and come closer to what we are looking for because we know our key performance areas that we are looking for. We've lost a lot of other players. One of them signed for Liverpool now, can you believe it? We should have signed him before he joined Porto. We were on top of Diaz. Unfortunately we delayed one or two days and he signed for Porto," Mngqithi said to the media at the Nedbank Cup media day.
"We have looked at a lot of players, I don't want to lie to you. You will think I am lying. Even Vinicius was on our list of players we should have signed. We saw him in the Brazilian Cup and we were trying to chase him and we slept a little bit. The following day he was signed by Real Madrid."
