Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Ernst Middendorp, wants a ‘winning mentality’ at Kaizer Chiefs if they’re to succeed – mentioning specifically their Absa Premiership clash with Stellenbosch.
The Glamour Boys will be looking to bounce back from their Telkom Knockout disappointment after they were booted out of the tournament by Maritzburg United on Sunday, and it’s imperative that they pick up three points in the Western Cape following Mamelodi Sundowns’ victory on Tuesday.
Chiefs had their lead at the top of the table cut to seven points ahead of their clash with Stellies, but have the chance to extend it once again if they can secure all three points at Cape Town Stadium.
Middendorp, speaking to the club’s official website, said, “We have to create a winning mentality. We were not aggressive enough in the last match, we must show more hunger this evening…
“We had some players missing in key positions in the last match. We played different combinations and, after conceding the goal, we tried different options and that was too late to catch up with the opponents.
“I don’t have much to say about the opposition - safe to say we must still respect the opponents even if we’re sitting on top of the log. They will be relishing their chances when they watch the weekend situation. We will amend the mistakes from the past games. I don’t treat league and cup games differently.”
The club also spoke of how, despite Erick Mathoho’s absence through suspension, they are able to welcome back Siyabonga Ngezana after he helped South Africa reach the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, though it remains to be seen whether he will feature tonight.
Middendorp can also now call upon Willard Katsande and Daniel Akpeyi once again after they served their suspensions for the semi-final, though they too may have to make do with a place on the bench.
