Pitso Can’t Walk Anywhere…

Al Ahly head assistant coach Cavin Johnson has opened up on the adulation and reverence Pitso Mosimane and his technical team have received since moving to Egypt six months ago.

Mosimane proved to be the tonic Ahly fans were in desperate need of when he managed to deliver the club’s first CAF Champions League title in seven years, as well as overseeing the Egyptian League win in addition to the Egyptian Cup, just three months after taking charge of the Club of the Century.

And while he had a strong following in Mzansi, Mosimane’s fame has sky-rocketed since he made the move from Chloorkop to Cairo in October last year, to such an extent that a mere stroll in the streets is a near impossible task according to Johnson, who spoke exclusively to the Siya crew during a short visit to the country last week.

“I can tell you that Pitso can’t walk anywhere. I can still go somewhere, but the celebrity status is what they thrive on in Egypt,” Johnson told the Siya crew.

“I mean, they don’t have 70 million supporters for nothing, so there will always be that type of pressure where media and social media is always in your face. You have no supporters in the stadium anymore, so social media has taken another step forward as far as everybody is concerned and you’ve got to accept that and go along with it and be very mindful of how you use that social space that you are in.

“But we’ve managed to handle it and Pitso, in all respect to him, has been able to handle the so-called celebrity status that he has now,” he added.

Johnson and Mosimane recently returned to action at Ahly following a five-day break that was awarded to players and staff, following their 3-0 Champions League win over AS Vita Club last week.
