For the first time since losing the title at the weekend, there’s finally comment from within the Kaizer Chiefs camp about the heartbreak.
Daniel Cardoso has taken to his Instagram account to reflect on how he felt following the devastating outcome of Saturday’s 1-1 Absa Premiership draw against Baroka FC, which, with rivals Mamelodi Sundowns winning their game with Black Leopards, meant the Glamour Boys had blown the chance to break their five-year title drought.
Sundowns were crowned champions despite Chiefs having led the log table for the large parts of the 2019/20 season.
“Don’t think I’ve felt this pain in my life ever, such disappointment and a bitter pill to swallow! Setbacks often lead to greater comebacks, I will pick myself back up and work harder for the next season to come!!!” read his social media post.
It’s the first time there’s been any kind of public comment from a member of the squad – coach Ernst Middendorp did not speak to the media after the game and the club also went unusually quiet without any post-match remarks on any of its platforms.
Middendorp, who still has a year left on his contract at Chiefs, is expected to vacate his post as head coach, but there has been no official word from the club on his future just yet.
