‘Disrespectful’ Downs Blasted By Arendse’s Agent

With Wayne Arendse’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns up in the air, his agent has launched a scathing attack on the club over the perceived ill-treatment of the veteran defender.

The Siya crew has reported extensively on the mass exodus that was expected at Chloorkop following the arrival of 14 new players, and joint head coach Manqoba Mnqgithi had also confirmed in the media that several would be offloaded.

This, he said, would be done to bring the squad to a manageable size.

Arendse’s name made the list, along with others, but his representative, Ashley Rasool, has revealed that his client had his jersey number withdrawn – without his prior engagement!

Was this to force the 35-year-old to agree to a loan move for the rest of the current season as he is now surplus to requirements at the club?

“Disrespectful and belittled are words that spring to mind. We're talking about an individual who epitomises the word professionalism,” Rasool told the Siya crew in this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma.

“To be treated in this manner is downright distasteful and a touch surprising given Wayne's good standing with the President (Patrice Motsepe) and seemingly sound relationship with previous head coach Pitso Mosimane.”

Arendse has had his No.6 jersey taken away from him and given to Brian Onyango, who signed a three-year contract last month.

The experienced defender has over 150 appearances for Downs and has been at Chloorkop for more than eight years.

“However, in football things change and in this instance whatever mutual success has been accomplished clearly stands for nothing with the player not being informed that his squad number, held since 2012 has been withdrawn – 11 trophies in eight seasons obviously not enough to gain professional courtesy which is very unfortunate,” added the agent.

The Siya crew reached out to Sundowns for comment and there has been no response even after we gave the club several days to reply.
