Varsity Football's Best

As the curtain was brought down on yet another exciting edition of Varsity Football, we take a look at those individuals who caught the eye throughout the campaign.

Of the eight universities who competed for the title, six have at least one player in the tournament team. TUT boats the most selections with four players making the cut, while both UJ and UP-Tuks have two players each.

The remaining spots are made up of players from UWC, NWU-Mafikeng and CUT.

Soccer Laduma's 2016 Varsity Football Team of the Tournament!

Dumisani Msibi (TUT)

The goalkeeper was simply sublime throughout the campaign and proved why he is the talk of the town with impressive saves and clean sheets. Let's hope he makes a return to the PSL after being loaned to Cape Town All Stars from Supersport United.

Elliot Seema (TUT)

The TUT captain is the glue that held his team together from the heart of defence. His positional play was outstanding and proved tough to get through in one-on-one situations.

Matthew Edwards (UJ)

UJ's captain fantastic is a master when it comes to reading the game and that leads to him having plenty of time on the ball to make decisions. He is calm and composed regardless of the situation.

Sipho Sibiya (TUT)

Utilising height to become an aerial weapon is what this defender has been able to do in each game. Be it on attack or defence, Sibiya can beat any opponent to a high ball.

Wendelle Martin (NWU-Mafikeng)

He does not fit the description of a conventional left back but he proved to be up to the challenge when his side was under pressure.

Nicholas Killas (UP-Tuks)

A no-nonsense defensive midfielder who proved time and time again that an opponent would need to be extra special to get past him. He is certainly not afraid to put his body on the line if it's needed.

Claudio de Almeida (UP-Tuks)

You know you have had a good tournament when the professional arm of your University hands you a 12-month contract with an option to extend it for an additional two years. Look out for this guy in the colours of AmaTuks during the National First Division.

Tebogo Mandyu (UJ)

He has been UJ's most creative player on attack and looks to create chances with his speed and silky skills.

Jacob Hlalele (TUT)

His positional play and match awareness has made him one of the standout players in the competition. Coupled to that is his uncanny ability to find the back of the net at will.

Orapeleng Manopole (CUT)

Words cannot do any justice to quality Manopole possesses. He is incredibility skilful and has been the find of the season during CUT's debut run in the competition. He has all the characteristics to become one of the best footballers in the country.

Josh Silent (UWC)

UWC's target man used his physique to great effect during the campaign and found the back of the net on five occasions.
