Wits coach Mark Haskins is unconcerned about the underdog tag his team is taking into Thursday’s much-anticipated Varsity Football final.
The Johannesburg team are enjoying a dream run in 2018 and have already surpassed expectations by progressing to their maiden Varsity Football showpiece. In contrast, their opposition, Tshwane University of Technology will be playing in its fourth final.
“If you look at our record last year and at USSA, naturally we are the underdogs. In fact, we were rank outsiders at the beginning of the tournament,” Haskins said.
“But that doesn’t really matter to us. We don’t worry about too much about these things. Football is played out on the pitch. If we give it our all, play our hearts out like we have done all season, then we are more than capable of producing another result.”
TUT have had the edge over Wits in Varsity Football over the years, with the most recent league encounter finishing 4-2 in favour of TUT. Haskins believes his team have learnt from their mistakes and are ready for the big game.
“The mood in the camp is nice and positive. Everyone is on high spirits. That’s the nice thing about a final. As a coach, I don’t need to motivate anybody,” he said.
“We have played them a couple of times over the years. And we have done our homework. We know how they play. They are a good side and it is a testament to the fact that this is their fourth final. But our boys are hungry and the spectators can expect fireworks in the final."
The two teams face off at 18:00 this evening.
