Benni Keeps Close Eye On Varsity Football Final

Cape Town City head coach Benni McCarthy is looking forward to a thrilling Varsity Football final.

The Tshwane University of Technology defeated neighbours and defending champions UP-Tuks last week before Wits stunned their city rivals, the University of Johannesburg in a penalty shootout in the Gauteng derby second semi-final.

McCarthy, who has a few of his younger Cape Town City squad members participating in Varsity Football for the University of Western Cape, will be keeping his eyes glued the television next week.

“I don’t often get the opportunity to watch the matches live, but when it does come on SuperSport I do watch,” McCarthy said.

“From what I have watched, Wits is a pretty solid team but TUT have played really good football too. I think it is a worthy final, both teams have played the best football so far. They deserve to be there. I am just gutted that UWC weren’t able to make it. May the best team win as it has been good football and good for our national game.”

Bafana Bafana’s all-time leading goal scorer, McCarthy, was one of the guest speakers at the Powerade Exclusive Performance Academy, a seminar to empower young coaches in the Western Cape which was held at the Sport Science Institute in Newlands.

“This is an unbelievable concept. Fantastic for young coaches to draw inspiration from events like these, where people share some great ideas. Especially around the psychology around the game because football is not always just the skill factor, but a lot of it happens between the ears and these types of events show young coaches how to motivate young people,” McCarthy said.

“I came to share my story. Hopefully, some aspiring coaches can take something out of it. Not everyone is going to be PSL coaches, but perhaps they can go on to Varsity Football and can benefit from events like these which helps them on their journey.”
