Wits Ready For UJ Challenge

Wits coach Mark Haskins admits University of Johannesburg’s star midfielder Mokete Mogaila poses a massive threat in this week’s Varsity Football semi-final, but it would be foolish to focus solely on one player.

Mogaila has lit up the Varsity Football 2018 season and is the leading goalscorer in the competition, playing a pivotal role in UJ qualifying for the semi-finals in top position after the league phase.

“Mogaila has done exceptionally well. He showed excellent form last year already. He is definitely someone to look at because he can change the game in an instant,” Haskins said.

“It is going to require team effort though. I don’t think it’s going to be individual brilliance or ‘X-factor’ that’s going to decide the course of the semi-final. It is about desire, hunger and intensity.”

Does that mean Haskins and his team have not plotted any specific game plan to thwart Mogaila in terms of man-marking perhaps?

“No, like I’ve said, he is a quality player, but football is a team game. It doesn’t take one person to win a match. It is about how the entire team performs.

“The way the game works is that we focus too much attention on Mogaila for instance, we are bound to leave gaps somewhere else for them to hurt us. We cannot afford to focus on just one player.

“Equally, we have quality players they need to focus on. Guys that in a blink of an eye they are gone. So, we prefer to focus on our preparation instead of worrying about what the opposition is going to bring or who they have in their ranks,” Haskins explained.

The semi-final between UJ and Wits take place on Thursday 13 Sept at 18:15.
