Battle For Bragging Rights In The Capital

It’s all about who will rule the capital in the Varsity Football semi-final on Thursday evening.

This is according to UP-Tuks captain Simbongile Njokwe ahead of the all-Tshwane semi-final against the Tshwane University of Technology.

“A semi-final against our neighbours! It doesn’t get bigger than that,” Njokwe said.

“Games like this you live and die for. You are playing to see who the big dogs of the capital are. We want to make our supporters happy that (they) have stuck by us throughout the campaign.”

The defending champions have once again put together a strong late run in the competition to sneak into the play-offs on the last day and are certainly gathering momentum. Njokwe doesn’t believe that his team are slow starters, but that the quality of the opposition should be considered during the early rounds.

“People are always saying we’re in trouble at the beginning of the competition, but look at who we play up front … TUT, UJ, Wits … these are all big strong teams. (Look) at North West, they started well against the weaker teams and then drifted away. I do think we have got good momentum though after the 3-0 win over UWC in Cape Town,” he said.

The UP-Tuks skipper is not expecting an easy game and thinks it could come down to one moment of brilliance or silly error.

“Both teams play a high level of football, so it might come to a single set-piece. It’s all about staying focused all the time,” Njokwe added.
