NWU Ready To Push For The Play-Offs

After throwing the cat among the pigeons in the last round of Varsity Football, North-West University now wants to go all the way to the play-offs.
The Mafikeng side surprised last season’s runners-up University of Johannesburg on their home ground with a 3-0 victory. The win pushed NWU into the third position on the Varsity Football log with 10 points, just behind Central University (12 points) and league-leaders Tshwane University of Technology.
It was a crucial victory as NWU face TUT in their last league fixture this week and will know that getting any points from that match will be tough, especially with the form Temba Ndlovu is showing for the defending champions.
“We had to dig deep against UJ but we know we have another do-or-die game coming up against TUT. They have been on a roll,” NWU coach Amos Xabanisa said.
“Temba Ndlovu is a quality player, but we can’t just focus on one player. Sometimes the strategy on the day is not about him, so we have to plan for the whole team. TUT have plenty of quality players.”
Xabanisa is certainly a coach that takes note of the finer details of football and plans accordingly. He was particularly accurate ahead of the game against UJ and reaped the rewards.
“We worked a lot on our tactical discipline. In the other games, we tended to make errors in crucial areas of the field which cost us dearly. I asked the guys to be aware of their surroundings and be careful with their play. Youngsters, especially, you have to remind them of these things because they can get carried away,” Xabanisa explained.
NWU will travel to TUT for their final game and Xabanisa believes this could work to their advantage in the same way like the clash against UJ.
