CUT Stun NWU As Tuks Earn A Victory in Round Five of Varsity Football
It was an entertaining round of Varsity Football on Thursday night as CUT shocked NWU to snatch a 2-1 victory on the road, while Tuks finally got themselves off the mark and UJ dispatched of UFH 3-0.
The fifth round kicked off with Tuks hosting Wits in Pretoria. A second yellow for Saluleko Mathonsi as early as the 20th minute meant that Wits were down to 10 men and facing an arduous task against a hungry Tuks side.

It didn’t take long for Tuks to get off the mark with a sensational free kick by Claudio de Almeida. Odwa Makha and Frank Mpedi added two goals in as many minutes in the second half to extend that lead. It ended 4-0 when Makha grabbed his brace late in the second half.
NWU welcomed CUT to the North-West Province, in front of their passionate home support. The hosts found the opener through former CUT player Cameron Chweu, whose opportunistic strike put them ahead against his former side.
But CUT were up for the fight and silenced the home crowd with goals by Rakgomo Taole and Keitumetse Mabathoana. Despite an end to end action, that’s how the scores remained after 90 minutes.
In the final match of the evening, UJ hosted UFH. The visitors put up a fight as it went into the break all square. But the Orange Army remained patient and eventually broke the deadlock thanks to Ziyaad Fredericks. Fredericks had his brace 15 minutes later and Pogiso Mabote added the third to seal the three points.
TUT face UWC on Monday in Tshwane after the match was moved due to TUT SRC elections taking place in the capital.
After five rounds TUT top the log, undefeated and on 10 points. UWC, UJ and CUT are all on 9 points, making up the top four.
