Varsity Football Knows How To Score

Scoring goals wins matches, there is absolutely no doubt about that and Varsity Football has produced a total of 150 net busters in 84 round-robin matches over the three years of competition.

That is an average of 1.7 goals per match, an impressive stat when you consider these are full time students and amateur footballers.

We take a look at the amount of goals scored in each year of the competition and how they compare to one another!

Please note: We are only comparing the round-robin matches and have not included the semi-finals or finals.

2013

The inaugural year of the competition set the tone for what has become a massive event on the football calendar with a whopping 80 goals scored across the 28 round-robin matches.

That makes for an average of 11.4 goals per round of four matches. Two rounds produced 16 goals - Round Two and Five - while Round One produced 13 goals, Round Four saw 11 goals scored and Round Six amassed 10 goals.

TUT, who topped the standings, emerged as the top goals scorers, having found the back of the net on 16 occasions while the next three teams - UP-Tuks, NWU-Mafikeng and NMMU-Madibaz - each amassed 15 goals in their seven matches.

The highest margin of victory for the competition was an astounding five goals and it happened on two occasions. Round Two saw Mafikeng put six goals in UFS-Kovsies' net while the Bloem students grabbed a goal of their own. Eventual winners, Tuks, were not going to be outdone though as they got the better of UCT in Round Four with a 5-0 hammering.

2014

The bar was certainly raised by the teams in this tournament as they contributed to a total of 94 goals - the most in the competition's short history.

That is an average of 3.3 goals per game and an increase of two goals scored per round (13.4) when compared to 2013. It also saw the most goals being scored in a single round, 19 to be exact - in Round Four.

Finalists UJ bagged the most goals of the competition (19) while Mafikeng (16), Tuks (15), Madibaz (12) and UWC (11) contributed to the record amount of goals.

Mafikeng and UJ shard the highest margin of victory as both teams humiliated UCT 6-0 in Mafikeng and Johannesburg, respectively.

2015

The competition may have produced the lowest amount of goals in total, 66 to be exact - but the matches were a lot closely fought and there were no "whipping boys" or run away victories.

The average of 9.4 goals per round and 2.3 goals per match makes for an interesting comparison as to how close the teams were this year.

There was a four-way tie for the most goals scored by a team with UWC, Tuks, Walter Sisulu and VUT contributing 10 goals each while the biggest margin of victory was just three goals.

VUT handed TUT a 3-0 defeat in Round Three while Pukke handed the Madibaz the same scoreline in Round Four before finding themselves on the wrong end of the same result in Round Six, at the hands of Tuks.

It is safe to say that students knows how to find the back of the net and the total amount of goals proves that. As this competition grows and develops over the years, we are sure to see many more spectacular goals, narrow victories and all-round insane scorelines.
