Madibaz bag victory over UWC
NMMU-Madibaz handed UWC their first defeat of the campaign with a narrow 2-1 victory over the log leaders in Port Elizabeth.
Two first half goals in the space of two minutes helped the home side end their campaign on a high note with their first victory of the campaign.
UWC dominated the early possession and could have taken the lead in the fifth minute when Thulani Mkosi found himself one on one with Matthew Booysen but the Madibaz shot-stopper did well to deny the midfielder.
Mkosi was back in the thick of things a few minutes later when he found himself in acres of space in the box after a superb build-up by the visitors. His shot beat Booysen but Lonwabo Balfour reacted quickly to get back and clear the shot off the line.
UWC remained in control but found themselves trailing by two goals in as many minutes as the Madibaz stunned the log leaders. A defensive blunder by Akhona Bonga allowed Cloudius Sagandira to pounce and his shot dribbled past Reon October in the UWC goal in the 20th minute before Achuma Klaas got his name on the scoresheet.
Madibaz captain Athini Bisha broke through the UWC defence in the 22nd minute and kept a cool head to roll the ball at Klaas' feet to allow the midfielder to slot into the Cape side's net.
UWC pulled a goal back in the 31st minute when Mkosi latched onto a Josh Silent ball over the top. He should exceptional control with his chest before unleashing a volley that beat Booysen and found the roof of the net.
The second half got off to a fairly sedate staff as the home side seemed content to sit back and defend their lead. UWC continued to press for the equaliser as the final 10 minutes of the encounter approached but a lack of execution in the final third cost them dearly.
UWC came close to levelling matters in the first minute of stoppage time but the crossbar rescued the home side from conceding a late goal and they were able to hang on for the win.
