Ajax Turns Out To Support UWC

Members of Ajax Cape Town's squad were part of the crowd at the UWC Stadium to get behind and show support towards the Cape Town students, however, their presence was only that - to support.

UWC boasted a few Ajax Academy players in their Varsity Football squad as well as a few others who were previously part of the Youth Development of the PSL outfit. Unfortunately, the Cape students were not able to bag the win which would have seen them remain in contention to defend their 2015 title.

This meant that UWC became the first defending champions not to make the playoff stage of the competition since it's inception in 2013.

UWC coach Salie Adams had to battle through a tough season and despite being eliminated before the playoffs, was not disappointed with what they were able to achieve.

"I am certainly not disappointed with the season we have had as it just gives us an indication of which areas we need to strengthen and what we need to improve on if we are able to qualify for the 2017 Varsity Football season.

"We had talented individual players in the team but we lacked that sense of leadership of someone who is able to take charge and to really drive the team in certain situations. We never had the ability, with the new players, to play to win but we have a good platform and there are a lot of things to work on - especially getting the team to work together.

"This season, we never had a team. We had good players but not a team. We struggled to get everyone to attend practices which hampered the team cohesion. We had about three guys from the Ajax Academy in the team which was another disruption we had.

"They had to be at Ajax for that training, so we could never get them to really gel with the team because they could not train with us and interact with us at video sessions and all those things. it's pretty simple that if you want to be successful, you have to play as a team and not as talented individuals," Adams said.

Adams has had some success in terms of having a few of his 2015 squad members sign professional deals with National First Division teams. Dynamic midfielder Tapelo Sixishe has signed a deal with Mthatha Bucks and Shakeel Sadien, who was the backup goalkeeper, signed for Milano.

"Although it is nice to see them make the step up [to the professional ranks], it would have been great if they could also have qualified academically to have something to fall back on," he added.

Adams stated that TUT has the momentum to go all the way this season.

"If you look at their squad, they have retained about 80 percent of their 2015 squad - which is key. Then you look at them having home ground advantage and momentum in their favour, having come through the league phase unbeaten, and it all points to TUT having the edge," Adams stated.
