UWC Secure Home Final
UWC secured their first ever home final when they squeezed past Wits 4-2 on penalties, after the match finished in an exciting goalless draw.
The match flowed from one end to the other but neither side could find the back of the net. Brylon Petersen handed Wits the advantage early in the shoot-out before UWC's captain, Reon October turned two spot kicks onto the upright.
UWC were making much of the early play as Wits sat back and looked for any counter-attacking opportunities but the home side had nothing to show for their dominance after the opening 15 minutes.
Wits began to settle from that point and saw more of the ball which helped them create chances but the UWC defence stood firm to snuff out any threat on their goal as the score remained deadlocked on the half-hour mark.
UWC continued to push numbers forward and created a few more chances but some lacklustre finishing saw those chances come to nothing as they went into the half-time break deadlocked.
The home side picked up where they left off and remained in the ascendency but continued to be let down by wayward finishing as the match reached the hour mark.
Wits were biding their time and looking for a counter-attacking opportunity and it came in the 68th minute when pushed numbers forward and it allowed Aleksandar Kocic to let fly with a long range effort. He watched as his powerful strike smashed into the crossbar and allowed the UWC to clear the danger.
The momentum was certainly with the visitors from that point as they put the UWC defence under all sorts of pressure but left themselves open to a counter-attack. The home side had two quick chances to grab the goal but a lack of support in the box saw Wits survive the attacks.
Both sides continued to press for a late winner but it was not to be and the match had to be decided by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
The teams traded opening kicks before the drama started. Brylon Petersen saved UWC's second kick before Wits saw their advantage fade away as they hit the upright with their third and fourth kicks. UWC held onto a 3-2 lead and it was Keenan Davis who slotted the final kick to send the home ground into ecstasy.
