Varsity Football

The Vaal Has Quality

VUT gave a very good account of themselves in their debut Varsity Football season and have a quality platform to build on under the guidance of their prolific coach Geelbooi 'Gomma' Masango.

Not only have they produced some performances that made everyone take notice of them but it is their accomplishments at the beginning of the tournament that certainly makes them a side to keep your eye on over the next few seasons.

The University side gained promotion to the ABC Motsepe League and Masango has made no secret of it that goal is to take the team into the professional ranks.

We have highlighted four players who stood out during the campaign!

Eddie Kwalane

He was one of the standout goalkeepers throughout the campaign as his consistent performances helped them achieve two clean sheets. He has a great awareness of his surroundings and is not afraid to throw his body around.

Phure Chochi

The diminutive figure is the heartbeat of the midfield and was at the centre of everything. His talent is easy to spot and the work he did at the Youth Academy of Orlando Pirates is clear to see.

His general positioning is a key characteristic of his game and his ability to read the situation is impressive. His positive attitude and self-belief will certainly stand him in good stead as he progresses.

Rudzani Nematandani

He can find the back of the net at will with any part of his body. He certainly turn heads when he scored a thunderbolt against WSU before an impressive header. Another key aspect of his game is the quality of his deliveries from outside the box.

He can find his team mate with pin-point accuracy.

Malesela Chokoe

It is extremely rare to find a utility player who looks comfortable in both attack and defence but that is what sets this guy apart from the rest.

He is a solid outside defender who understands the role of shadowing attackers and making tackles in key areas to avert any danger. He has also found himself spearheading the VUT attack at stages and he looked as if he was performing that role for a number of years.

He remained composed when under severe pressure while his skills and pace allowed him to rip through defences and create chances while he also posseses an educated boot that knows where the back of the net is.

These players, along with a few others, will certainly prove to be a handful for the other teams in the ABC Motsepe League and the confidence they have in each other will go a long way for them to ultimately progressing through the ranks.
