ABC Motsepe Star Leads Madibaz
Athini Bisha is the only player in the NMMU-Madibaz squad who has experience at a higher level as he represents Highbury FC in the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League.
Bisha has been handed the captain's armband in a fairly settled squad that are without just two payers from the 2014 campaign. Stalwart and midfield general Kurt Duff as well as Lukhanyo Rasmeni are the only players missing this year's competition as they exceed the tournament's age limit of 25.
Despite not having two of his more experienced players to call on, coach Graeme Harrison said it now provides an ideal opportunity for some new guys to make a name for themselves in the competition.
"Kurt [Duff] and Lukhanyo [Rasmeni] will definitely be missed because they are two of our missed experienced players but in saying that, it opens up a chance for other players to show what they are capable of.
"One such player is Lonwabo Balfour, the younger brother of Lundi Balfour and I am really excited to see how he goes in a competition of this level. He is fresh out of High School and is an exciting prospect," Harrison said.
The Madibaz gained promotion to the SAB League recently and head into the Varsity Football competition with valuable momentum and confidence as they look to improve on their fifth-placed finish in 2014.
"The tournament is very tough and none of the matches are going to be easy. Yes, there are a few new teams this year but it remains hard. There are no easy games and there will definitely not be any walkovers.
"We are excited about playing in another Varsity Football tournament and we have a bit of confidence going into the event. Gaining promotion was a big deal for us because we need to play in a higher league.
"We tend to have to punch above our weight at these sort of tournaments because out LFA League is not as strong as the other Universities. Be that as it may, we will come out firing and look to get back into the Top Four," he added.
The Madibaz get their Varsity Football campaign underway against newcomers VUT at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Pretoria on Monday, July 20 at 18.00.
