PSL Duo A Boost For Tuks

PSL players, Lucky Mathosi and Botshelo Mfulwane, have become available for UP-Tuks in the next round of Varsity Football which has given coach Evangelos Vellios a nice headache.

Mfulwane starred for the institution in their match where the striker scored twice in a 5-1 drubbing of the University of Limpopo. Mathosi, on the other hand, was unavailable for that match but makes a welcome return to the student side.

The duo hasn't been able to train regularly with their fellow students which has given Vellios a lot to think about ahead of their crunch match against log leaders NWU-Mafikeng.

"We have four days to work on our combinations and see what works and what doesn't. It would have been easier to have both of them (Mathosi and Mfulwane) at training but that's the nature of having PSL players in your squad," he said.

UP-Tuks had the better of the two sides last year when they beat the Mafikeng men in the round robin phase as well as the semi-final on their way to claiming the inaugural title.

This time, however, things are a little different as Vellios has been studying his opponents in the hope of racking up their third victory over the North West side. A victory for the Pretoria students will see them claim top spot on the log and in essence, secure them a spot in the semi-final.

"I'm not a coach who sets points targets but if I have to, then I think we need four or five points from the remaining three games to secure a home semi. Our aim, though, is definitely top spot and in order to get there, we need to beat the current log leaders," he added.

UP-Tuks are well aware of the threat NWU possess following their 6-0 demolition of UCT where Tshenolo Machwisa scored the tournament's first hatrick.

"We are well aware of Machwisa. He trained with us for some time and we were very interested in getting him to join our setup," Vellios said.

Vellios knows anything could happen in the closing stages of the competition as NWU's remaining games are against the teams currently occupying positions two, three and four on the log.
