Middendorp's Varsity Connection
Bloemfontein Celtic coach, Ernst Middendorp, has established close ties with Varsity Football outfits Kovsies and UJ.
Although the experienced German coach currently has his hands full at the start of the PSL season, his squad worked with both Varsity Football outfits as part of their pre-season preparations.
Kovsies actually managed to beat Bloemfontein Celtic in a training match, and Middendorp was impressed by what he saw from Godfrey Tenoff's side.
"We trained twice that day so it was not a serious match but for them to beat Bloem Celtic in any match is huge. Godfrey has done a good job with that team - they play a nice, compact strategy.
"I have not been able to watch them as much as I would like in the actual tournament as I am quite busy at the start of the season, but we send scouts to their games to monitor their players," he revealed.
Middendorp believes that Varsity Football presents great potential for football development in South Africa, by providing a platform for promising players and coaches like Carnell.
"Some big name players just want to jump straight into coaching without much development. I discuss things regularly with Bradley and you can see that he is growing as a coach. He has already had a huge impact and influence given his European experience," he said.
Another aspect of the tournament that has impressed Middendorp has been the support, which rivals some PSL teams.
"I am happy to see that there are 7 000 people at the games in Mafikeng, that is very impressive and it is vital to promote soccer at this level," he said.
