Wounded Warriors Out To Slay Giant Killers
Bottom side UCT will have it all to play for when they take on rampant UJ in Soweto on Monday night.
The first half of the Varsity Football season has been a torrid affair for the Ikey Warriors, who find themselves rooted at the bottom of standings with just one point from four matches.
The Cape students are desperate for a win, but will be wary of their opponents, who have been turning heads as newcomers to the tournament.
The debutants, who are coached by former Bafana Bafana star Bradley Carnell, have set the competition alight with an exciting brand of football and have already bagged two outstanding wins against last year’s finalists, UP-Tuks and NMMU-Madibaz. UJ are currently third in the standings and stand a very good chance of making the semi-finals.
Ikey Warriors are coached by another former Bafana Bafana player in Rowan Hendricks, who has now turned to the university’s successful rugby coach, Kevin Musikanth, to help his players turn the tide.
Musikanth recently mentored the Ikeys Tigers to lift the 2014 Varsity Rugby trophy and he will be working with the wounded Warriors to help them with their mental approach for the rest of their football season.
Hendricks has revealed he will also be tweaking his squad and formation to counter Carnell’s tricky outfit for the match next week.
UCT will make changes to their attack as talisman Louis-Roman Moussi Sopp is suspended after being shown a red card in their defeat to NWU.
The Ikeys coach says he will be reshaping his midfield as a result. The Cape side also earned a welcome boost in mid-week after securing a USSA victory against Maties.
The match on Monday will be televised on SuperSport.
