UCT Stalwart Touts UJ As Champs
UCT defender Byron Donaldson believes newcomers UJ will be crowned as Varsity Football champions this season.
The centre back is still licking his wounds after the Ikey Warriors slumped to a 6-0 drubbing on Monday night when they lost to a rampant UJ side, who have been turning heads with their exciting brand of German-style football.
The giant-killers are currently top of the standings and have been outclassing their opponents with sterling displays of teamwork and professionalism.
UCT have no way of making the last four, but Donaldson, who has been consistently starting for the Ikeys this season and also took part in last year’s competition, feels UJ may have what it takes to go all the way.
“They have definitely improved since we played them last season. Their coach Bradley Carnell’s influence really shows because the football they are playing is exciting and they work well together as a team.
“I see them making it to the final with NWU, who are the other unbeaten team this season. I think UJ could be surprise winners in their first year,” he said.
Donaldson says the Ikeys are growing as a team and will come back stronger next season.
“We obviously want to finish strongly, so we will aim to win both our remaining fixtures. We had a tough start with that away game and from there we were just unlucky.
“We will learn from our mistakes though and as a team I see growth in the players. Next season we will do better,” he said.
UCT are back home next week to face UFS-Kovsies, a match they believe they can win in front of their supporters in Cape Town.
