Zinnbauer On Selecting New Faces At Pirates

The Josef Zinnbauer era at Orlando Pirates is taking shape after the German mentor registered his fourth win in five Absa Premiership games at the weekend since taking over the reins at the Soweto club in December last year.

Pirates’ 3-1 mauling of Highlands Park was another show of consistency from the Buccaneers, who were still fresh from narrowly putting reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns to the sword just a few days earlier at the same venue.

Zinnbauer has even given some of the players who were very much on the fringes under interim coach Rulani Mokwena a look in, one of them being Bongani Sam, the left back earning his first start in a Pirates shirt on Saturday evening.

“We have managed to get a lot of points and it started with our hard work at training with my staff. And the players have continued to give all they can,” Zinnbauer told reporters.

Asked specifically about Sam and Paseka Mako, two players he named in his starting line-up for the first time since he was appointed, the Pirates mentor suggested it was reward for work the duo had put in during training.

“Yes, we are happy we have players that we can put in. Sam comes in and Mako comes in and scores, that’s nice for me. That is what the coach wants, to see the work from the training sessions on the field,” the coach said.
