SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has commented on the future of Thamsanqa Gabuza, who has been linked with an exit from the club.
As reported by the Siya crew, the 34-year-old has landed on the radar of Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu, who were keen on luring the striker to Kwa-Zulu Natal to strengthen the team, specifically in the CAF Champions League.
However, speaking to the Siya crew, Matthews revealed that there was no formal approach made for ‘Ghanda-Ghanda’ dismissing reported interest as ‘newspaper talk’.
“No, again, its newspaper talk, [there is] nothing that has come to us, no contact, no discussions. There is nothing happening on the Gabuza front,” he said.
The crew revealed that Gabuza could possibly join Usuthu at the end of the season as a free agent, with his contract set to expire in June 2022. Matthews has informed the crew that Gabuza does have an option in his contract, but he would have to prove why the club should activate it.
“He does have an option but again, its something we’ll look at. We want to look at players conduct the whole season. I can’t be making decisions halfway through the season and then I am giving contract extensions when we don’t meet our team goals, we don’t finish in the top four and we don’t advance in the Nedbank Cup.
“Then unfortunately some people who are expecting contract extensions are not gonna get because we are here to be competitive and this group of players need to be competitive,” he added.
