SAFPU Stand Up For Players Amidst Possible Football Return

The South African Football Association (SAFPU) has spoken on behalf of the players amidst the possible return of football.

With Minister of Sport Nathi Mthethwa having already given the green light for training to resume for contact and no-contact sports, the PSL is awaiting a response from the government about possible return of football.

As the football fraternity is waiting for the authorities to provide the way forward regarding 2019/20 season, SAFPU has spoken for the players regarding the safety measures that would have to be followed for them to play matches.

“The view of the players is that anything that begins to address the health and livelihood of the players begins to address the current situation that the players find themselves in. Within COVID-19 we know that there are front liners – people who are in health and so forth. They are required to go and work but they need to be provided with the PPEs (personal protective equipment) in line with the occupational health and safety act,” SAFPU president Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe told the Siya crew.

“Section 8 of the occupational health and safety act says, and including under normal circumstances, the employer must ensure health and safety of the workers, and in this instance the players. We would rely on the act. We have been part of the process in terms of the consultation where the issue of coming up with the comprehensive plan of what needs to happen going forward,” he said.
