Mamelodi Sundowns are counting on three players delivering big performances on Saturday for a visit to their bogey side Wydad Casablanca.
The Brazilians face the 2017 CAF Champions League winners in Morocco this weekend when both sides will be playing their second match in Group C having had contrasting results for their opening fixtures.
Downs beat Angola’s Petro de Luanda 3-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night to go top of the table, while Wydad played to a 1-1 draw with USM Alger earlier that day.
Sundowns were without goalkeeper Denis Onyango and Musa Lebusa through injury and coach Pitso Mosimane said he would rely on them against Wydad.
“We have big games coming now – serious things. We are going to Casablanca, then final of the Telkom Knockout, Algeria and then Wits,” the coach explained.
“They are big games and we need Denis back and we need Thapelo (Morena, who was subbed with a calf strain on Saturday), Themba (Zwane) because we also won’t have Gaston (Sirino) for the local league. We need our soldiers back. Mosa Lebusa had a tight hamstring and it is much better to have him in Casablanca than this game (Petro) because we are home and we preferred that he rests.”
Another player Mosimane said he expects to deliver in a game of this magnitude was Tiyani Mabunda, who sat on the bench against Petro.
“It’s tough there with corners and free-kicks. So you need the big boys, the soldiers. Those are the games for Musa and Sugar Mabunda in the midfield. It’s not the game for passing and passing. It’s a totally different personnel that is required and I know who to play that game,” said Mosimane.
