'I Had Told Myself That I Would Be Playing In The Lower Leagues'

A Mamelodi Sundowns player opened up about how his promotion to the first team caught him by surprise.

Nicholus Lukhubeni was promoted from Sundowns’ reserve team in to the first team back in November last year, where he’s since started in three out of four appearances for the Brazilians and scored his first goal in a 3-0 win over Chippa United in the Absa Premiership.

Speaking on Sundowns' official website, the right-back admitted that he was content with continuing his career in the lower leagues and did not see his promotion coming.

“Honestly, I did not see my promotion coming. I had told myself that I would be playing in the lower leagues and that was that, but the following day I was registered to be playing for the first team,” Lukhubeni explained on Sundowns’ official website.

The 24-year-old’s first goal in the Sundowns colours will be one of the things he will remember for a long time to come.

“Not a lot was going through my mind. I saw space, saw Gaston (Sirino) on my left and I think Vila (Sibusiso Vilakazi) on my right. I thought I was going to pass, but I saw the defenders tracking back, so I decided to take a shot because my left foot does a lot of good work, so I thought I should put it to the test too,” he said.
