Ncobo Labels Club Boss’ Ref Solutions as Ludicrous

Referees in the PSL have come under some major scrutiny in recent times, with the likes of Pitso Mosimane, Owen Da Gama, Steve Komphela and Benni McCarthy having questioned the standard of officiating in the PSL.

Cape Town City boss, John Comitis, is one of the latest authorities to weigh in on the criticism. The club chairman suggested a solution for what many perceive to be a serious problem within South African football.

Reportedly, Comitis suggested that top European officials come to South Africa to improve the overall refereeing standard in the PSL.

It’s a suggestion that former PSL referee, Ace Ncobo, refers to as ludicrous.

“It’s ludicrous that somebody (John Comitis) who’s been in football for so long would say that. For starters, what makes him think that European referees are better than South African referees?

“When you watch European football, and they make school boy errors that are worse than those made by our referees here, so how can you then get sub-standard referees to come and uplift referees that are on a better footing, in terms of their performances,” Ncobo stated.

Mr ‘Spot On’ also expressed why this could never practically work, from an association viewpoint.

“It’s impossible, you can’t do that. Refereeing falls under the jurisdiction of the national association, in our case, which is SAFA.

“SAFA constitutes its panel of referees from the citizens of this country. It can’t constitute a panel made up of citizens of other countries,” he added.

Do you agree with Comitis that outside intervention is necessary, or is Ace Ncobo right about South African referees, performing at a high standard?
