Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs Return Date Revealed

Although the club is yet to announce Ernst Middendorp’s successor, plans for Kaizer Chiefs players to return to training have been revealed.

The Siya crew understands that the Amakhosi squad is expected to report for pre-season early next week, with Monday pencilled in as the likely return date – by which time a new coach might have been appointed.

Gavin Hunt remains the front runner to take over the reins at Naturena, although reports in local media have also suggested that Adel Amrouche could be the surprise choice for Chiefs to permanently replace Middendorp.

Kaizer Motaung, the Amakhosi chairman, said in a press statement last week that the club would have a new coach before the players return.

Following the conclusion of the 2019/20 season a little over a week ago, which ended in tears for the Glamour Boys as they were pipped by Mamelodi Sundowns to the Absa Premiership title, the players were given time off.

But preparations will soon be underway ahead of the upcoming campaign – but the Premier Soccer League is yet to confirm the start date.

Chairman Irvin Khoza had mentioned October 9 as the proposed kick-off, but with that date part of the FIFA calendar, it is possibly this will now be moved by at least a week or more.

Hunt returned to Johannesburg a few days ago after spending some time in Plettenburg Bay to unwind, and it is understood talks are ongoing with Chiefs for what would be his first role at one of Mzansi’s Big Three clubs.
