Komphela: Bobby Had To Intervene…

Steve Komphela says he and his Golden Arrows technical team have long decided which players will be moving on from the club in preparation for next season.

Asked whether they’d left the door open for those who impress if the season resumes post the nationwide lockdown, which has been enforced by the spread of the Coronavirus, in true Komphela fashion he used a story from his time at Kaizer Chiefs to make a case why the thought has crossed his mind. He still stuck to his guns, however.

“We had already done our audit. So you could say we were 99 percent clear of whatever, I mean it’s seven matches to go and we would have known who’s played the most number of matches and what they gave us,” Komphela told the Siya crew.

He then recalled how Mandla Masango, just as he was on the verge of being shipped out of Naturena, rescued his Chiefs career to win his place back and form part of a title-winning Amakhosi outfit in five years under Stuart Baxter.

“I remember when I was at Chiefs (2015-218) they were telling me Masango’s story when he became a deadly combination with George Lebese and George Maluleka. They say the year when they were hot, Bobby (Motaung) had to intervene to keep him because he had been left behind when they went into camp,” he said.

“You can imagine a scenario where he had that window and transformed things when he was just about to be left out of the team. So maybe this is unfortunate for those who would have made an impression and forced us to reconsider our position.”

Komphela, whose Arrows side were in seventh place on the Absa Premiership table before the campaign was suspended indefinitely last month, said he was likely to prefer the tried and tested, to consolidate a Top 8 position instead of trying to decide who still needs an opportunity to impress him and his technical team.

“For us we were done. We were lucky enough that we did our audit before the lockdown. It’s just unfortunate that the ones who would have been in a situation where they changed our minds, they need that opportunity of those remaining games. But when the league reopens you will look to those who had been consistent to finish it off – you can’t be trying new things. You need to hit the ground running and you need people who understand the philosophy and approach,” said Komphela.
