Baxter: It's Not Over Yet

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has given a hint on who will be the number one goalkeeper for the club in the coming season.

Both Itumeleng Khune and Brandon Petersen got a chance to play during the past weekend’s Carling Black Label Cup match against Orlando Pirates. While Khune pulled off a good save in the first half to deny Thembinkosi Lorch, it was Petersen who stole the headlines with his penalty saves during the shootout as Amakhosi lifted the pre-season trophy.

Baxter was impressed with both goalkeepers but said it’s not over for Khune yet and the other three goalkeepers – Petersen, Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce Bvuma – have to fight him for the number one spot.

“The goalkeeper coach Lee (Baxter) is in Sweden at the moment. He was on a zoom call with all the goalkeepers and what he told the goalkeepers I can share with you. He told them that Kaizer Chiefs has four numbers and they are fighting. They can be number four one day and then they can be playing the next day. We are blessed,” Baxter told the media after the match on Sunday.

“You saw Brandon’s performance when he came on. Itu was more like the Itu I know from before when he played, with his shot-stopping, his distribution, his agility. Itu has committed himself to be dedicated to go as far as he can go with his career. For me, it’s not over yet (for Khune). And the other three are fighting him for that number one spot. It gives us a headache, but that’s a headache I will take every day of the week.”
