After failing to find a stable team in Mzansi, having turned out for the likes of SuperSport, AmaZulu and Ubuntu Cape Town, 24-year-old Darren Smith made the journey to Europe at the start of the season.
Along with former SA under-20 captain Ayabulela Konqobe, Smith took to life in the Finnish second division like a duck to water at Ekënas IF.
The striker immediately proved his worth as he helped his team to a fourth-place finish in the Ykkönen League, featuring in all of his side’s 22 matches in their campaign.
Even more impressive for the Cape Town-born striker is his haul of 21 goals in 26 games in all competitions. Smith was crowned the Ykkönen top goalscorer for the 2019/20 season with 18 domestic goals to his name.
Like Konqobe, Smith’s contract with EIF comes to an end in December 2020 and speculation is rife surrounding the future of the young South African duo.
