What do Dortmund need to do to close the gap on Bayern? Listen to Kres Harrington's analysis by clicking on the podcast player below
In the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign, Bayern Munich dominated the league, finishing 13 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund on their way to a historic treble. While many expect Bayern to continue in their rich vein of form this season, many eyes will also be on Dortmund, who have a wealth of young talent in a balanced team that many expect to put up a better fight this time around. With the league kicking off soon, Dortmund seem to have kept Manchester United target, Jadon Sancho, on their roster for at least another season, which will bolster their squad ahead of their clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Analysing Dortmund’s transfer business & league expectations as compared to Bayern, expert Bundesliga analyst Kres Harrington stated, “You have to applaud what Bayern managed to do, bringing in Sane, finally. Obviously they’ve reached their ceiling, the only thing they can do is repeat. Their cushion last season was 13 points, and that brings me to Dortmund. Dortmund is going to have to make up that difference. They spent most of their money on Jude Bellingham. I like him and I like what the coach Lucien Favre has said about the 17 year old.”
“He said [Bellingham] is mature beyond his years, and age is only a number. He’s a young piece, Thomas Meunier also from PSG adding to Dortmund, and then the young 15-year-old (Youssoufa) Moukoko. I’m really waiting to see his debut, he should be making it in the first half of the season. For Dortmund to get within that 13 points, they’re going to have to seize their moment.”
