City Deflect Pirates Interest In Top Target

Cape Town City have made a decisive decision regarding the future of an Orlando Pirates transfer target.

As reported in edition 1202 of Soccer Laduma in December, Josef Zinnbauer has identified Abbubaker Mobara as a target. The interest came as a surprise, taking into consideration that the Bafana Bafana international had a relatively unsuccessful spell at the club between 2016 and 2019.

However, Siya sources made it clear that the coach rates him highly and would welcome the player back to Orlando. And indications are that City are aware of Bucs’ interest.

Having signed for the Citizens in June 2019 on his return from Pirates, Mobara’s original deal was set to expire in June 2022, though the Mother City club had an option to extend the contract by one year to take it to 2023.

City have now extended the utility player’s stay in Cape Town, with the club announcing the contract extension. The club stated on Twitter, “The club is delighted to confirm that we have exercised the option to extend the contract of defender Abbubaker Mobara. He signs until June 2023.”

The Citizens have deflected Bucs’ interest and ensured that the top player remains a City player for at least two more years, and it remains to be seen if Pirates or any other interested suitor do pursue the player, they would have to meet City’s asking price.

Mobara made nine starts in the league for Jan Olde Riekerink’s side so far this season, before his progress was disrupted due to injury, which ruled him out of action since last month.

Lebogang Manyama and Aubrey Ngoma, among others, have managed to secure moves elsewhere after having their contracts extended by the Mother City outfit, although Ngoma has since return to the club from Mamelodi Sundowns, while Manyama has been with Kaizer Chiefs since returning from abroad.

It remains to be seen if Mobara would leave the club, despite having extended his deal.
