The agent of one of Mamelodi Sundowns’ priority targets before the transfer window slams shut this month has shed some light on the potential deal.
As reported by the Siya crew yesterday, SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has emerged as a player of serious interest for the Brazilians along with his teammates – the midfield duo of Sipho Mbule and Teboho Mokoena.
The three players were all at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, with Williams the only overaged squad member.
He has returned to find that Downs are pushing to get him to Chloorkop before the transfer window closes on August 31.
Soccer Laduma sought comment from his agent, Lance Davids, on whether the move was likely to happen and the representative, without giving much away, offered some clarity.
“Yes, I can confirm that Sundowns have made an enquiry. But you know as well as I do that the decision rests with the club where Ronwen has a contract – and that is SuperSport,” the ex-Bafana Bafana star explained.
“He has been a loyal servant of the club and it’s well documented that he has been there since he was 12-years old, hence he is the club captain. I believe he would be open to a fresh challenge.”
Williams has in the past also been linked to Orlando Pirates, but sources informed the Siya crew then that the deal would have only gone over the line if the Buccaneers axed their current first choice, Richard Ofori.
That has not happened.
Indications are that Downs are still hopeful of signing all three players before the registration period is closed.
