With Ali Meza a doubt for Sunday’s clash against log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, his Mamelodi Sundowns coach is pinning his hopes on another in-form striker.
Pitso Mosimane confirmed last night that Meza, who has been leading the line for the Brazilians in several of their previous domestic matches, was “still healing” and would be given time to continue his recovery even if he sits out the weekend’s fixture.
And Mosimane is confident that another goal hero in Mauricio Affonso has emerged after the Uruguayan scored his third goal in as many matches on Wednesday night to help Sundowns beat Highlands Park in the dying minutes of the game.
Mosimane said: “It’s unbelievable. We don’t play him full games yet because he is not ready. But sometimes you ask yourself if we are holding him back. We probably now need to give him 45 minutes to play now.”
The coach also reminded journalists that Sundowns still had Lebo Maboe, their top goalscorer last season, available now that his load has been managed.
“He (Meza) got injured when he has just scored. We have to allow him to heal. But we have Lebo who played well (against Highlands) and Mauricio always comes up and does something,” Mosimane added.
