Official: Playing Football Matches Is Illegal!

The South African Football Association has issued a strict warning against football matches and social games taking place during level 03 of the nationwide lockdown.

Minister of Sport, Nathi Mthethwa confirmed that as of June 01, under strict protocols, both contact and non-contact sport will be allowed to resume training on their respective grounds, however, only the latter will be allowed to completely resume play.

Both the Premier Soccer League and SAFA are still deliberating the way forward for domestic football in the country and until an official statement is issued on the way forward – clubs have been urged to remain patient.

However, the association has since revealed that they’ve received complaints about football matches and social games taking place, reiterating that these things are against the law.

“We have received numerous complaints from across the country where some people are still playing football, mostly social games. This is illegal and unacceptable under Covid-19 regulations,” SAFA’s Acting CEO, Tebogo Motlanthe said on their official website.

“No football is allowed to be played and this regulation applies across the board. All clubs and individuals are requested not to breach the government Covid-19 lockdown rules. 

“Everything is on hold as things stand and we must all await government instructions on the way forward. In the meantime, players must stay at home, obey Covid-19 regulations such as social distancing and maintaining strict hygienic rules,” he added.
