Stellenbosch FC are thinking of making history and a good story to tell with attempting to swap positions with Orlando Pirates on the Absa Premiership log after this weekend’s match.
Should Stellenbosch emerge victorious at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, the Mother City outfit would move up the standings and be above Pirates on the log.
Stellies are currently on seven points and 14th on the log, while the Buccaneers are eighth on the standings with nine points.
Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker is relishing the possibility of leading the Cape outfit to overtaking the Soweto giants.
“What a better story for Stellenbosch Football Club to say after nine matches you are above Orlando Pirates in the league and you’ve put yourself in higher position. We’ve got a long mission ahead of us – 22 matches left in the league,” Barker told the media.
After a stuttering start to the season, Stellenbosch won their first match before the break against Polokwane City, with the Cape side now having accumulated five points from a possible nine from their last three matches.
“We have to get to a certain points to achieve what we want to achieve. This weekend is just another sort of stepping stone in that direction. But the pressure is on them (Pirates). It was always going to be – playing Stellenbosch twice in two weeks, I think the expectation from everyone and their fans is that they would win both comfortably,” the coach said.
