5 Previous Golden Boot Winners: Where Are They Now?

Previous Absa Premiership Golden Boot winners either no longer ply their trade in Mzansi’s top-flight or have not been able to maintain their goalscoring form. Soccer Laduma takes a look at the previous five winners and where they are now.

This season, Gabadinho Mhango is leading the race for the award as he’s already accumulated 14 league goals, with seven games left to play.

The 27-year-old striker is also just two goals away from reaching Mwape Musonda’s 16 from last season (2018/19), which saw the Zambian secure the gong at the annual Premier Soccer League awards ceremony.

But how has Musonda’s form been since then?

The 29-year-old has scored just five league goals for Black Leopards this season.

In the 2017/18 season, the Golden Boot was shared between Percy Tau and Rodney Ramagalela, who both scored 11 goals each.

Tau has since made his way to Europe, plying his trade for Club Brugge in Belgium, on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, while Ramagalela has since moved on from Polokwane City and is now with Highlands Park.

Tau has hit the back of the net three times in the Jupiler Pro League this season, while Rama G has scored just once in the Absa Premiership.

The season before that (2016/17), Lebogang Manyama won the Golden Boot after scoring 13 goals for Cape Town City in arguably his best season in South Africa’s top-flight.

Manyama is now with Kaizer Chiefs, where he is also enjoying a rich vein of form, scoring six goals in the league so far.

In the 2015/16 campaign, Collins Mbesuma picked up the award after scoring 14 Absa Premiership goals for Mpumalanga Black Aces.

The 36-year-old is currently with AmaTuks in the GladAfrica Championship.

Former Free State Stars striker, Moeketsi Sekola also scored 14 goals in the season before (2014/15) and won the Golden Boot. The 31-year-old is now with Real Kings in the GladAfrica Championship.

How many goals do you think Mhango will be able to reach at the end of the season? Let us know in the comments section below.
