He’s scored more Absa Premiership goals this season so far than he did in his entire spell with Orlando Pirates, but there’s still plenty of time to go…
Thabiso Kutumela was never really able to make a name for himself with the Buccaneers following a move from Baroka back in 2016, scoring three goals across all competitions in his two-and-a-half season spell in Soweto.
Now though, having played his part in helping keep Maritzburg United up last season, ‘Kutu’ has continued his fine form in blue and white stripes this season, grabbing five goals in the league and another four in cup competitions as the Team of Choice march up the table.
The 26-year-old looks revitalised as he aims to try and recreate his 18-goal haul from the 2015/16 National First Division campaign, and he’s still not happy with nine goals in all competitions this time around as he aims for more before the season is out.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the former Bucs attacker said, “First of all, I just want to thank God for all the power he gave me… I’ve grown both as a player individually and as part of the team. So far I am happy to help the team to win games because if I don’t score, I assist.
“So far, I’m happy, but I wish that I could have scored more. I believe that I will keep on helping the team and score more goals in the remaining matches. I’m not a player who targets a number of goals to score, but I just work hard and try to score as much as I can when I get the opportunity to play and see where it ends.”
Meanwhile, Kutumela also had some words for fresh-faced attacker, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, after his Man of the Match performance against Stellenbosch, saying, “The boy is still young and is growing each and every time… He needs more help from us, and we must be patient with him and give him proper guidance to excel his game.”
Maritzburg face Polokwane City at Harry Gwala Stadium tomorrow night as they look to grab another three points in their pursuit of securing a top eight finish.
